Background of the Study
Urban green spaces in Ede North have garnered attention as vital components of city planning that enhance residents’ mental well-being (Owens, 2023). Parks, gardens, and recreational areas provide not only aesthetic and environmental benefits but also crucial opportunities for stress relief, physical activity, and social interaction (Foster, 2024). As urban areas become increasingly congested and stressful, the presence of natural spaces is linked to improved mental health outcomes and overall quality of life (Murphy, 2025). However, rapid urbanization and competing land use priorities threaten the availability and quality of these green spaces. This study explores the relationship between urban green spaces and mental well-being, evaluating how access to nature influences stress levels, social cohesion, and overall life satisfaction (Owens, 2023). The research integrates environmental psychology with urban planning perspectives to offer recommendations for preserving and enhancing green spaces in urban settings.
Statement of the Problem
The diminishing urban green spaces in Ede North have raised concerns about their impact on residents’ mental well-being (Owens, 2023). The reduction in accessible parks and recreational areas contributes to increased stress, reduced physical activity, and diminished social interactions (Foster, 2024). As urban development accelerates, the loss of these natural sanctuaries adversely affects community mental health and quality of life (Murphy, 2025). This study seeks to address the gap in understanding the mental health implications of declining green spaces and to propose strategies for integrating nature into urban planning.
